1. Function first
It’s easy to get caught up with style of your taps, but it’s important to think about how you intend to use them. Consider the type of fixtures you have before you make a choice. If you have a vessel basin, you will need a tall basin mixer. A freestanding bath may also require a tall bath tap. With wall mounted mixers and bath spouts, consider how far they stick out from the wall and whether a hinged spout is required. Also consider whether a hand shower is required in the bath for hair washing and bathing children.
2. Taps or Mixer
Bathrooms and showers generally have single lever mixers with a ceramic cartridge.
However, depending on your basin or bath, you can also choose pairs of taps or three-piece taps with a central spout. The advantage of taps over mixers is that differing water pressure on the hot and cold supply is not an issue as each can be controlled separately.
Mixer taps are a more modern type of tap and are easier to turn on and off with just a gentle push. Mixers are also more sensitive to large differences in water pressure between hot and cold supply, resulting in minimal lever movement between very hot and very cold.
3. Water Pressure
When selecting a tap, it is important to know what type of water system is in your house. If your house has a fully mains pressure system (mains pressure hot and cold water), you can use any mixer tap with confidence. However, if you have an unequal pressure system with mains pressure cold water and low pressure hot water, you will need a tap that is suitable for unequal water pressure.
